Two Dealerships Targeted
Car dealerships are increasingly becoming targets for thieves, as demonstrated by a recent case in Elmhurst, Illinois. Authorities have charged four individuals in connection with the theft of a vehicle from a local dealership, along with other crimes in the area.
The Break-In
According to police reports, the theft occurred in the early hours of February 11. Officers discovered damage to the service bay doors of a dealership on Grand Avenue. Surveillance footage revealed that a black SUV rammed into the dealership doors, followed closely by another vehicle.
One of the suspects exited the second vehicle, entered the dealership, and retrieved keys for a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee valued at nearly $54,000. The suspect then drove off in the stolen vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the other vehicle used in the crime had also been stolen earlier that night from another dealership just half a mile away.
The Growing Threat to Dealerships
This case highlights the trend in automotive theft, where criminals are becoming more aware of how easy it is to steal vehicles. Breaking into dealerships to steal keys and drive off with high-value vehicles has become a common tactic. Additionally, with large dealership inventories being managed using a pegboard and exposed keys, the risk of theft is greatly increased.
